Supporting Complex Projects with Flatbed Services

If your business ships over-dimensional and heavy haul freight, you know how important it is to work with a logistics company that can handle your specific needs. Over-dimensional freight not only requires specialized equipment, but also specific safety protocols. And it can be hard to find a transportation provider that can do all of that.

This was the case for an industrial engineering services provider, who needed to ship mobile power units to U.S. military bases.

“We used to cycle through several different carriers trying to find one that could handle our specific loads,” said a power systems project manager at the industrial engineering firm.

They needed someone who understood the kinds of equipment they were hauling and could handle tricky delivery sites in small spaces and remote locations. Our over-dimensional and heavy haul team, combined with our flatbed service offerings, fit the bill.

Making Over-Dimensional Shipping Easy

The size and critical nature of this customer’s freight made the transportation process more complex. But that’s where our people truly shine. For more than 60 years, we’ve taken the burden of supply chain planning off of our customers’ shoulders by designing creative solutions tailored to each customer’s unique needs.

“We look for someone who understands the kind of equipment we’re shipping, realizes the value and critical nature of it, and has the resources to handle the logistics that come with oversized loads.”

- Power systems project manager of an industrial engineering services provider

This customer needed to ship very large, very heavy freight. Some of the loads we shipped for them weighed over 100,000 pounds – well over the weight limit of an ordinary flatbed trailer. Through our multimodal shipping options, we provided the customer with the specialized equipment they needed. We utilized an extendable RGN trailer with axles designed to scale the weight of the cargo.

The second challenge on this project was the delivery sites. These power stations were often needed in remote areas that were not set up for deliveries like this. We managed to not only deliver their freight safely but also found efficiencies that allowed us to ship their freight faster and in a more cost-effective manner.

“What really stood out was how organized and thorough [J.B. Hunt was] from the beginning. They asked the right questions to learn exactly what our shipments involved and developed good plans. They also came back with options we hadn’t considered, offering quicker or more cost-effective ways to move our loads.”

Over-dimensional loads like this also require special permits, escorts and routing. We took care of all this for our customer, taking one more item off their plate so they had more time and bandwidth to devote to the important work they do.

Securing High Value Loads

Cargo security was also a concern for the customer because of the high value of the freight they were shipping. We placed trackers on every load so our customer was able to see where their freight was in real time. We also utilized sealed trailers to prevent the cargo from being tampered with.

“Being able to monitor where the shipment was at any point really helped, especially with the value of what we’re shipping. For the really high-value loads, the added security of sealed trailers stood out. It showed us that J.B. Hunt takes those extra precautions seriously, which made us feel a lot more confident about handing over the equipment.”

Our people also kept in constant contact with the customer, making sure they stayed apprised of where their freight was in the transit process and answering any questions that came up.

“One thing I really appreciate is the communication. We’re kept in the loop throughout the shipment, and it’s easy to get in touch with someone if questions come up. That level of communication makes it easier to feel confident everything is on track, especially with high-value equipment.”
