Everyone has heard it when the going gets tough: "Don't be a quitter!" But on November 17, 2016, everyone who smokes should become just that: a Quitter. It's time to quit smoking as part of the 2016 Great American Smokeout. The annual event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Why You Should Be A Quitter
In the latest study of long-haul truck driver health by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 54% of truck drivers admitted to regular use of tobacco products. Smoking is known to contribute significantly to the occurrence of diseases such as lung, throat, and esophageal cancer, heart disease, and lung and respiratory diseases. Stopping smoking can have significant health benefits in a short amount of time:
- After 20 minutes, heart rate and blood pressure drop
- After 12 hours, the carbon monoxide levels in the blood return to normal
- After 2 weeks, circulation improves and lung function increases
- After 3-6 months coughing and shortness of breath decrease
- After 1 year, risk of coronary artery disease is reduced by 50 percent
- After 2-5 years, the risk of mouth, throat, esophageal, and bladder cancer are cut in half
- After 10 years, the risk of suffering from lung cancer is reduced by half
- After 15 years, the risk of heart disease is the same of a non-smoker's
