Our Safety Culture Is Driven for You™
At a glance: Our safety culture helps us protect people, strengthen operations and serve you better. We built this company-wide mindset with valuable contributions from teams including operations, maintenance, inclusion, security, IT and more.
What is safety culture? It’s a mindset, turning safety from an item on a checklist into one of our company values. From driver training to cybersecurity, there’s a good reason we put so much effort into keeping our people, places and equipment safe: when we deliver safety, we deliver excellence. That’s what it means to be Driven for You™.
Work with a company that puts safety first.
Prioritizing Safety on the Road
It’s no surprise that company drivers are at the forefront of our commitment to safety. Every year, our Million Mile event celebrates those who have achieved two, three, four or five million safe miles. This memorable moment reflects hundreds of smaller moments, each made up of good decisions that prioritized safety, just like the one below.
An operations manager, Cindy, arrived one January morning to a flurry of messages from drivers asking about the winter weather’s impact on their routes. She checked the forecast and followed her instincts, telling the drivers to stay off the roads for the time being. She needed time to research conditions before providing her recommendations. Leadership supported her and, an hour later, Cindy had shared a safe plan with everyone, including the drivers, office employees and transportation managers. Reflecting on that moment now, Cindy said, “That hour I’m confident saved lives and our customers understood that.”
A big component of our safety culture is the specialized training we give company drivers on equipment usage, defensive driving techniques, regulatory compliance, food safety, customer-specific SOPs and more. New drivers also have mentors who check in with them for weeks, developing real relationships and building the foundation of a safety-oriented mindset that we hope will carry them to their own Million Mile moment.
Safety in Maintenance Operations
Our maintenance people install, inspect and repair everything from engines and tires to trailers and taillights. It’s not an easy job and requires more specialized training than you might expect. It also requires vigilance, dedication and humility.
Bodie has been part of our maintenance team for more than 30 years, but an incident that occurred when he was a new technician caused him to think differently about safety.
While servicing a brake system, a mistake resulted in a spring coming loose and hitting his face. He learned that it's okay to slow down and ask questions to prevent a safety issue, something he now passes down to other technicians.
Our maintenance safety procedures have evolved over the years. If there’s an injury, we follow up with calls, emails and re-enactments to understand what happened and help prevent it in the future. Thanks to these precautions, today we have facilities like:
- Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with over one million accident-free hours
- Joppa, Maryland, with 18 accident-free years
- San Antonio, Texas, with 24 injury-free years
These incredible achievements are only possible because of our people’s commitment to safety in transportation.
Inclusion Makes Our Safety Culture Possible
You don’t have to drive a truck to contribute to our company’s safety. We want our people to bring their authentic selves to work and have the confidence that comes from being valued for who they are. Because they feel supported and heard, our people come to work ready to ask questions, be curious, unleash their creativity and share ideas that just might change our business forever – or yours.
Our ELEVATION program encourages employees to identify innovative ways to be more efficient and reduce costs. Every idea we’re able to put into action creates more value for our people, customers and shareholders. As of 2026, our ELEVATION Wall of Fame includes 631 names, each representing an idea driven by one person’s desire to make a difference.
An inclusive workplace is one where people encourage and look out for each other – and that’s a key component of our safety culture.
Protecting People and Property
Our security teams have a lot of ground to cover between our corporate campus, remote sites and customer freight in transit. Their mission requires state-of-the-art technology, constant vigilance and volunteer Safety Wardens ready to help when needed. From conducting emergency response drills to protecting customers’ high-value freight, our security teams make it possible to do what we do.
But not all safety threats appear to us in person. Sometimes they lurk in an unexpected email urging us to provide privileged information. Our IT Risk Management Team works hard to shield our network from cybersecurity threats, but in an era when a single click can cost a company millions of dollars, all employees need to do their part. Not only do our IT experts have a safety plan to protect our network, they also engage our J.B. Hunt community with posts, emails, videos and more to raise awareness and help us protect our resources.
Safety Helps Us Serve You Better
From driver training to inclusion and cybersecurity awareness, our culture of safety underpins everything we do. Safety creates efficiency, which allows us to provide exceptional service for our people and our customers. That’s our goal, mile after mile, because we’re always driven for you.
