Managed Logistics Built to Scale

When fast-growing door manufacturer Steves & Sons needed a transportation provider with multimodal expertise, our Managed Logistics team delivered. We provided the technology, capacity and on-site management to support their continued growth and build a long-term strategic relationship.

How Did Our Managed Logistics Team Add Value?

To optimize the Steves & Sons network, our team focused on increasing efficiency, reducing costs and creating the ability to scale as needed. As the customer’s business evolved, we found the flexible capacity they needed, ranging from air freight and flatbeds to an occasional need for refrigerated trailers. We also sourced backhaul to reduce empty miles, generating an estimated $4.8 million of additional revenue for the customer. Working together, our people created an end-to-end supply chain solution built on safety and customer service.

Leveraging Multimodal Solutions

As the customer’s business grew, we leveraged our density and capacity to create a unified Managed Logistics solution:

  • Our Dedicated Contract Services® team connects Steves & Sons plants, suppliers and customers in multiple states, with on-site management for effective support.
  • Our brokerage services team vets third-party carriers who provide scalable seasonal coverage and extra support as needed.
  • We provide services at the port to handle transloading and transport of raw materials, and use LTL to deliver finished doors to Steves & Sons' end customers.

“J.B. Hunt is who everyone else has to beat if they want to come into Steves. They set the bar, not just on pricing but delivery to service. They know our customers, they know our business…that’s what’s important at the end of the day.”

Enterprise Supply Chain Technology

Our Engineering and Technology team created custom tools to improve visibility and cost-savings:

  • Using our scan-off-the-truck tool, drivers scan freight as end customers unload it, improving delivery accuracy and saving about $700,000 per year.
  • Through consolidation and pool-point optimization, we reduced transfer points and damage claims to save the customer around $90,000 per year.
  • Universal tracking numbers (UTNs) for deliveries provide per-stop data, narrowing delivery windows for the end customer.

“We enjoy and love working with the customers that trust us with their growth plans. It gives us the opportunity to really add value to them and that’s what we want to do in Managed Logistics. We add value to our customers across the board.”
