J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT), one of the largest supply chain solutions providers in North America, recently received the SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the tenth consecutive year. The company was also named a 2019 SmartWay High Performer by the agency, recognizing SmartWay Transport Partners that lead the industry in efficiency and sustainability.

“J.B. Hunt is committed to providing sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions for customers,” said Craig Harper, executive vice president and chief operations officer at J.B. Hunt. "For a decade now, the EPA has recognized our efforts to reduce emissions and carbon footprint with the SmartWay Award, and we look forward to continuing this tradition.”

J.B. Hunt was one of 55 truck and multimodal carriers to earn the distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s 3,700 participants. Only five companies, including J.B. Hunt, have received the SmartWay Excellence Award ten times. The Excellence Awardees were honored at the 2019 American Trucking Association’s Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, California.

“This year, the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is recognizing 50 truck carriers and five multimodal carriers as recipients of the 2019 SmartWay Excellence Award,” said EPA’s Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Sarah Dunham. “These awardees are the top two percent of environmental performers among all of our SmartWay Partners. They are redefining best practices for freight transport by reducing fuel costs and improving the public health of the communities they serve.”

J.B. Hunt has a long history of delivering products using safe, efficient solutions. In 2018, J.B. Hunt avoided nearly 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere through intermodal conversion, which is equivalent to removing more than 334,000 passenger vehicles from the road for a year. The company also added the first all-electric, medium-duty box trucks with zero tailpipe emissions to its private fleet and quadrupled its number of temperature-controlled intermodal (TCI) containers. Additional sustainability initiatives at J.B. Hunt include reducing engine idle time, governing top speed limits, engineering fleet routes that maximize efficiency, and using biodiesel fuels when possible.
