Aging Infrastructure Report Card: Does Your State Make the Grade?

November 15, 2016 1

Every day, millions of truck drivers crisscross the continental United States on our 47,000-mile interstate highway system. America’s interstates have spurred massive economic growth. And they have held up well considering they serve a population that has grown by 91 percent since they were originally built. But at 60 years-old, our highway system shows signs of its age.

According to the 2013 American Infrastructure Report Card published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE):

  • 32 percent of all highways rate in poor or mediocre condition;
  • 47 percent of urban interstate highways rate as poor or mediocre; and
  • more than 58,000 bridges rate as “structurally deficient.”

Use the ASCE’s interactive map to see if your state has a passing infrastructure grade.

Aging infrastructure is not a new problem. It’s also not easily fixed. Funding continues to be the major hurdle. The ASCE estimates $3.6 trillion needs to be invested by 2020 to bring our country’s aging infrastructure up to a passing grade. However, with budgets already stretched thin, major investments for maintenance and construction of highways seem unlikely.

What can you do?

As a driver or carrier, you and your business are directly impacted by deteriorated infrastructure. Contact your Congressional representatives to share your opinions on road and bridge conditions, safety, and regulations. Use the Congressional directory to find your Congressional representatives’ contact information. U.S. highways and interstates are integral to continued interstate commerce and transportation. Let your voice be heard in support of maintaining the safe functioning of the national highway system.
