Rail Gate Restrictions Disrupt Intermodal Service

The intermodal network continues to work through ongoing ramp congestion, labor challenges and equipment imbalances. NS has lifted all gate restrictions at its Chicago/Calumet, IL ramp to Atlanta/Austell, GA and Charlotte, NC. In addition, NS has eased gate restrictions to its Jacksonville, FL ramp to a point that is not impacting J.B. Hunt or its customers. However, effective immediately, NS has issued new gate restrictions from its Chicago/47th Street, IL ramp to Mechanicville/Albany, NY and Ayer, MA. In addition, effective Monday, October 4, J.B. Hunt will pause picking up and ingating all shipments originating at NS terminals destined to NS’s Croxton, NJ ramp. This action is necessary to allow customers to catch up on unloading and restore equipment balance in New Jersey following Hurricane Ida. J.B. Hunt expects to resume normal pickup operations to Croxton, NJ beginning Monday, October 11. Below is a summary of current rail gate restrictions impacting J.B. Hunt customers.

Current gate restrictions - Standard traffic will be impacted in these lanes:

  • NS Chicago/47th Street, IL to Mechanicville/Albany, NY
  • NS Chicago/47th Street, IL to Ayer, MA
  • All NS origin points to Croxton, NJ

Customers can help improve network fluidity by accepting deliveries within 24 hours of deramp and unloading dropped containers within 24 hours of arrival. With a vast network of service offerings, J.B. Hunt can provide highway solutions to mitigate these intermodal disruptions. A representative will communicate load specific delays, along with alternative routing options.

J.B. Hunt will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. Customer service is extremely important to J.B. Hunt, and we apologize for the inconvenience these service interruptions have caused.
