Ramp Congestion Disrupts Intermodal Service
Update 2
December 22, 2020
The BNSF and NS railroads continue to make progress processing the backlog of traffic disrupting
intermodal service. As a result, the BNSF has lifted gate restrictions for shipments out of its Chicago and
San Bernardino ramps. In addition, BNSF has eased Los Angeles gate restrictions, allowing normal
ingate volumes. The NS railroad has also reopened ingates at its Toledo, Chicago 63rd Street, and
Chicago 47th Street facilities. Allocations have been removed in the Chicago 63rd St to/from Toledo, OH,
lane and removed from Chicago 47th to Albany (Mechanicville), NY; Taylor, PA; and Bethlehem, PA.
Further, NS has eased restrictions to allow normal volume from Chicago 47th to Harrisburg, PA, and
Elizabeth, NJ. Very restrictive gate allocations remain in place to Ayer, MA. Even though most restrictions
have been lifted, continued delays should be expected as J.B. Hunt and its rail partners process the
backlog of volume.
New shipments destined for Ayer, MA, will remain at shippers through at least December 23.
J.B. Hunt will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. Customer
service is extremely important to J.B. Hunt, and we apologize for the inconvenience these service
interruptions have caused. A J.B. Hunt representative will communicate load specific delays along with
alternative rail and highway routing options.
