Intermodal Conversion

J.B. Hunt leads the industry in converting over-the-road (OTR) shipments to intermodal. Intermodal doubles the efficiency of truckload with reduced carbon emissions and lowered cost. Other benefits include increased security, reliable service levels and consistent access to capacity. J.B. Hunt Intermodal operates the largest fleet of company-owned 53' containers and drayage fleets in North America, providing more opportunity for customers to convert OTR loads and decrease the carbon footprint of their supply chain.

Energy-Efficient Trucks and Equipment

J.B. Hunt strives to keep its fleet energy efficient by continuously improving equipment with after-market updates and routine maintenance including:

  • Low rolling resistance tires
  • Direct-fired cabin heaters
  • Trailer skirts and flow bellows
  • Direct drive transmissions, including Automated Manual Transmissions
  • Lower gearing ratios
  • Speed governing
  • Idle reduction tactics

Renewable Technology

Additionally, J.B. Hunt invests in renewable technology solutions. All company asset vehicles are equipped with solar-powered tracking units that optimize the location and availability of containers for efficiency. Each unit includes a full-length cargo sensor, reducing cargo theft and unauthorized use of assets. This technology allows J.B. Hunt to increase efficiency and gain better control over its operations.

Electric Trucks

Sustainability is a leading force of innovation at J.B. Hunt. We’ve recharged our sustainability commitment with the order of 40 Tesla electric trucks along the West Coast and use of 5 Fuso eCANTER trucks at various U.S. locations. J.B. Hunt is proud to offer trucks with cleaner emissions in our fleet.

DCS Solutions

J.B. Hunt’s Dedicated Contract Services offers specialized equipment solutions that improve energy efficiency for OTR truckload shipping purposes. These services are customer-specific and generally operate under agreements with terms of at least three years.

CARB Regulations

Many of our daily operations are governed by regulations and mandates designed to keep our fleet operating safely and efficiently. The regulations from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are no exception. CARB requires all diesel vehicles and equipment operating in California to adhere to specific emission reduction requirements. The regulations are designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter, and oxides of nitrogen depending on equipment type.
