Sustainability

The SmartWay Transport Partnership program is a voluntary effort between the government and the transportation industry to develop and implement methods to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in transportation.

Carbon dioxide is a key greenhouse gas. Particulate matter can lead to significant respiratory health problems. Nitrogen oxides are also potent greenhouse gases, and contribute to acid rain, smog, and water quality degradation. Based on the emission reductions made in our operations compared to a base operation with no innovations around fuel efficiency, we have reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 56%, particulate matter by 84%, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 88%.

Company initiatives such as aerodynamic tractors, low viscosity drive train lubricants, auxiliary power units, tire inflation monitoring programs, idle and speed management practices, and intermodal service have made our operations more fuel efficient and less polluting. On a per truck basis, we emit fifteen tons of these chemicals less per year because of these innovations.

J.B. Hunt Transport is doing the right thing for our society and environment by making its operations less harmful and less dependent on carbon-based fossil fuel. Besides being one of the safest carriers on the road, we are one of the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation companies as well. Efforts to realize further improvements in our fuel efficiency and impact on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions continue. Feel good about the work we are doing together.

Safely getting there with cleaner air truly is the smart way.
